Branding Past, Present and Future
Essence Design creates new branding for Lichfield Cathedral.
Lichfield Cathedral is the only medieval three spired Cathedral in the UK and has been a place of pilgrimage, discovery and worship for over 1,300 years. The past of Lichfield is full of riveting stories, intrinsic heritage and the Cathedral is living witness to it, however, its position for the future as part of a vibrant community and working house of God is of utmost importance.
This was the initial brief for the re-branding of this famous; purpose built Cathedral that is soon undergoing major renovation and restoration work.
It was important to the Chief Officer of the Cathedral, Timothy Pain, that the new brand would be modern and contemporary and not bask in a medieval tradition and old-fashioned view of what a church related branding should be. Tim Pain says: “Lichfield is not only a historic site of European significance, but it is a dynamic working church and part of the community offering services, events and venues for visitors to Staffordshire & the West Midlands.”
Essence Design created various routes to help the team at Lichfield Cathedral to visualise branding routes in the context of their everyday work. Initially there were various routes that were taken into a consideration and developed, but after a short time a clear contender emerged and the new identity will be launched in January on a range of stationery, visitor guide leaflets, banners and books as well as incorporated into the website.
Regine Schmidt, Creative Director at Essence Design adds: “Branding such a landmark as Lichfield Cathedral was an excellent experience as was working with the team of the organisation. It is one of those projects you look back at and are proud of your work and a job well done.”
